Car Loans While on Disability, ODSP or Fixed Income

Every guide to financing a car by income source covers the same four people: the self-employed applicant, the student, the retiree and the person between jobs. Almost none of them get to you. If your monthly income arrives from ODSP, CPP Disability, WSIB or a private long-term disability plan, you’ve probably been told to call back when your situation changes. At Autorama, we finance used cars for Toronto buyers on benefit and fixed income, and we’ve been doing it for more than 25 years. Your application goes to the same lenders, on the same forms, as everybody else’s.

Does ODSP count as income for a car loan?

Yes. Lenders assess three things about any income: whether it is stable, whether it can be verified on paper, and whether it comfortably covers the payment. Benefit income is unusually strong on the first two counts, because the amount doesn’t fluctuate with overtime, commission or a slow season. A monthly ODSP or CPP Disability statement proves your income more cleanly than three months of variable paycheques ever will. Fixed-income applications run into trouble on the third count instead, and that’s a question of choosing the right vehicle and the right term.

The income types lenders accept

Most Canadian lenders financing used cars in Ontario will work with ODSP, CPP Disability, CPP retirement, Old Age Security, WSIB benefits, private long-term disability payments and pension income. Some will also count a spouse’s income if you apply together, which raises the payment you qualify for and often improves the rate. Child benefit payments are handled differently from lender to lender, so bring the paperwork and let us check rather than assuming it won’t count. What almost no lender accepts as sole income is a one-time settlement, or a benefit with a scheduled end date that falls inside your loan term. If your benefit is time-limited, say so at the start, because it changes which lenders your file goes to and can usually be handled with a shorter term.

What you’ll need to apply

Bring your two most recent benefit statements or an award letter, government photo ID, a void cheque or direct deposit form, and a utility bill or lease showing your Toronto address. If your income comes from more than one source, bring documentation for each, since combined income frequently moves you into a better tier. A valid driver’s licence is required to finance and insure the vehicle. That’s the full list for most files, and the finance office can start working on an approval the same day it arrives.

How much car you can afford on a fixed income

Work backwards from what’s left after rent, utilities, groceries and medication, not forward from the sticker price of a car you like. The payment is only part of what a vehicle costs you every month once insurance, fuel, maintenance and winter tires are counted, and Toronto premiums run higher than most of the province. Stretching a term to seven or eight years to reach a smaller monthly figure is the most common mistake we see on fixed-income files, because it leaves you owing more than the car is worth for years. A reliable used sedan or compact SUV on a shorter term keeps room in your budget for the month something goes wrong. The numbers are worth running both ways before you sign anything.

When your credit took damage too

A long stretch on a fixed income often follows a period that hurt your credit, and that combination is exactly what Autorama’s lender network was built to handle. A collections account or a past repossession doesn’t end the conversation, though it will affect your rate and the down payment you’re asked for. Our bad credit car loans program serves Toronto buyers in this position, and it runs on the same application form as every other file. If you’re between benefit programs right now, or waiting on an ODSP decision, the Autorama guide on how to get a car with no job explains what lenders weigh while you wait.

Accessibility and choosing the vehicle

Tell us early if your needs narrow the search. Ride height, door opening width, trunk clearance for a folding chair or scooter, and how far the seat slides back will rule out a great many vehicles, and it’s far easier to filter for that before you fall for a car than after. We can pull matching vehicles from the used cars for sale inventory and hold them for you to see. If you’re planning to add hand controls or a transfer seat later, mention it during the search, because some models are considerably cheaper to modify than others.

Get your approval first

Get approved, then go shopping. An approval tells you the exact payment range you’re working within, which keeps you away from cars that don’t fit the budget and makes everything after it faster. Fill out the Autorama finance application online or call the dealership directly, and we’ll tell you what your benefit income qualifies for before you spend a Saturday walking a lot. There’s no cost to apply and no obligation to buy.
